Rachel Evans To All Instructors
Rachel Evans has a background in computer programming, research, graphic design and music composition with BA’s in Music, Art & Design from LaGrange College and a Masters in Library and Information Science from Florida State University. While studying music theory and programming, she was encouraged by a composition professor to begin writing and applying for grants to conduct, present and perform her ideas nationally. This led to a second degree in Art where there was more freedom for multi-disciplinary projects, courses in web design, coding and development. This all ultimately took her down the path of academic librarianship with a knack for creative problem solving working with and organizing library sites and systems.
Creatively, Rachel is a successful solo recording artist having released over 100 musical works on vinyl, CD and cassette labels across the globe since 2008. Her solo and collaborative compositions have been reviewed in The Wire, Pitchfork, the Quietus, and Brainwashed.com. She completed her first commissioned film score in 2023 for "An Evening Song: For Three Voices" which premiered at international film festivals. Her favorite medium to work with visually is collage, having self-published an original collage-style tarot deck in 2018 and affirmations deck in 2024. A large set of her musical and visual art catalog include collaborations with her husband Grant. Together they have run a boutique music label with an emphasis on DIY and obsolete formats since 2008. The pair have performed at prestigious venues like John Zorn’s The Stone, and been invited to participate at festivals including Hopscotch, SXSW, and Slingshot. Locally they have performed at the GA Museum of Art, and had visual works exhibited at ATHICA, Cine, and Tiny ATH galleries.
Rachel is mom to a 10 year old and 2 year old, and has taught kids, ages 5-15, at Firefly for the past 3 years. She is also a library faculty member at the University of Georgia since 2012 having held positions including Web Developer and Digital Media Specialist, Metadata Services and Special Collections Librarian, and most recently User Experience Librarian. Before beginning her work at UGA, Rachel also gained valuable experiences in multiple public and academic library settings across the state including jobs as a Children’s Librarian, Teen Programming Librarian, and Instructional Technology Assistant. Having graduated as a homeschooler herself, Rachel enjoys the flexibility homeschooling offers their family. Rachel is excited that Firefly can continue to be a part of that equation for years to come as it has been for the last 4 years and counting!
